Hyperphosphatemia is a common issue in advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and dialysis patients. High phosphorus is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality and bone mineral disease. Dietary phosphorus is the main source with high quantities in processed foods. KDOQI guidelines recommend phosphorus of 3.5 mg/dl to 5.5 mg/dl. These are the list of medications developed so far to tackle hyperphosphatemia.

Nicotinamide, Bixalomer (Resin based phosphate binder) and Colestilan (non-calcium-based phosphate binder)
Conclusion.
We need to consider the pill burden, side effects and cost into account when choosing a phosphate binder. In short, the best phosphate binder is the one patient takes consistently!
